Chapter 13

“Malene, what have you done now?” Willard asked when we showed up at his house.

When he first saw Matthew, my grandfather nearly fell over. It took him a minute to regain his composure, and during that time, he asked Matthew to sit on the porch while he pulled us inside.

Willard wasn’t finished with Malene yet. “Of all the crazy things you’ve ever done, I think this just about takes the cake. Are you out of your mind?”

She pushed her sunglasses up to the top of her head. “And here I thought you’d be grateful to have your son back.”

“Our son is gone,” he snapped. “He’s been gone for years. If Matthew was out there, he would’ve returned to us by now. He would’ve come back. Whatever that thing is”—he flapped his hand toward the front porch—“I don’t want any part of it. And you shouldn’t want anything to do with him, either.”

“That thing is your son,” she said.

“No it isn’t,” he bellowed.

I debated leaving while they were shouting at one another. After all, Rufus had told me to keep an eye on Matthew, and I was. I could see him through the living room window. He sat in the swing rocker, sailing back and forth.

Surely he could hear that Willard was giving Malene what for. But even if he did, Matthew showed no indication. He just kept right on swinging back and forth, to and fro.

“Willard,” I chimed in, “there’s something that we have to understand.”

Fire blazed in his eyes. “Oh, there’s something I understand, all right. My wife has lost her mind. Tell her that the portal will swallow this town and the first thing she does is head out there and conjure up our dead son.”

“Our son is not dead,” Malene ground out. “He’s out there, and he can hear you.”

“Let him hear me,” Willard shouted. “I don’t care.” He closed his eyes and sighed. “You’ve gone too far this time. Even for you. And you’ve done a lot of crazy things in our lifetime together, but this takes the cake. What were you thinking?”

Tears bubbled in her eyes. “I was thinking that perhaps we could see Matthew again.”

That broke Willard. His face and his body sagged. My grandfather reluctantly opened his arms, and Malene slowly stepped into them. “I’m sorry I shouted,” he said.

“You’re not forgiven,” she said sourly.

He chuckled. “I’m not happy about this. Clem and I want to keep you safe, but how can we when you run off doing silly things?”

She looked up at him. “It’s not so crazy to want to see your child.”

“No, I suppose it isn’t.”

The anger melted off Willard, and he wrapped his arms around Malene tighter. I understood that he couldn’t stay angry at her, and I also understood that Willard wasn’t exactly over the moon about the newest addition to his family.

As he hugged Malene, Willard shot me a look as if to say, First chance we get, we’re getting rid of this “Matthew.”

I couldn’t say I blamed him.
